Leading with Landscape: Toronto’s Waterfront Transformation

October 1 - 3, 2026

Leading with Landscape: Toronto’s Waterfront Transformation was a three-day symposium and exhibition bringing together landscape architects, designers, scholars, policymakers, Indigenous leaders, and the public to explore the role of landscape in shaping Toronto’s waterfront and the future of city-building.

Reflecting on 25 years of waterfront revitalization, the symposium examined how landscape architecture can create vibrant public spaces, reconnect communities with the water, restore ecological systems, and support more resilient and inclusive cities. Discussions explored the importance of ecological regeneration, climate resilience, and reconciliation in shaping the waterfront’s future.

EDL Director Prof. Nina-Marie Lister helped organize the event and participated as a speaker, contributing to conversations on the role of landscape-led approaches in addressing complex urban and ecological challenges. The accompanying exhibition remains on view through November 2026 at the Larry Wayne Richards Gallery in the Daniels Building at the University of Toronto.
