A Greenway Reconnecting Communities

Enhancing Parks, Open Spaces, and Active Transportation Around the Allen Road Expressway

Caroline Bucksbaum is a student in the Master of Planning and Urban Development program at Ryerson University. This project was completed for the City of Toronto, City Planning Division, Community Planning – North York during her summer internship. The purpose was to create a map and photo inventory of segments of missing active transportation path along the Allen Greenway, an open space system on both sides of a below, at, and above grade expressway in northwest Toronto.

She designed and created a comprehensive guidebook and resource on the Allen Greenway that includes her research, many photos, and 22 original maps she made. The Allen Greenway Guidebook is for planners, urban designers, landscape architects, engineers, the public, and anyone interested in or working on this initiative or planning projects that involve linking parks and open spaces or designing trail systems. Her guidebook contains policy and historical context, past Allen Road corridor studies, a photo inventory of missing paths, recommendations for enhancing the public realm and wayfinding, and next steps. It provides the background needed to proceed with conceptual designs, public consultation, and implementation for individual stretches of path or as part of an urban trail master plan.
